Sub-basins of the AAFC Watersheds Project - 2013
The “Sub-basins of the AAFC Watersheds Project – 2013” dataset is a geospatial data layer containing polygon features representing the Standard Drainage Area Classification (SDAC) 2003 defined sub-drainages of the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) Watersheds Project. Canada has eleven major drainage areas which are divided into 164 sub-drainage areas. All drainage areas and sub-drainage areas are named and have an identifying ‘number’. Sub-drainage areas have ‘numbers’ that share a common ‘three-character’ designation. For example, the 05A sub-basin contains stations ‘numbered’ 05AB006 and 05AC007.
Forecasted Basin-Average Accumulated Precipitation (ECMWF - 7 Days)
This polygon layer displays sub-basin-level average precipitation derived from the ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) model. This layer helps hydrologists, forecasters, and planners see how much rainfall/snowfall is predicted or has occurred in each sub-basin, supporting medium-range water resource and flood management. We are intersested in the forecast period of 7 days.This layer aggregates ECMWF forecast precipitation over polygonal sub-basins. Each feature includes attributes for average accumulated precipitation, forecast run/valid times, and sub-basin identifiers. ECMWF is a leading global model offering medium-range (up to 10 days) forecasts at a high skill level. By focusing on sub-basins, this layer aids in local-scale decision-making—enabling more precise flood risk assessments, reservoir inflow estimates, and water resource planning across the region of interest.
Scientific survey of Icelandic scallop (Chlamys islandica) in the Mingan Archipelago (fishing areas 16E and 16F)
Research surveys targeting Icelandic scallops (Chlamys islandica) have been conducted by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) at one- or two-year intervals in the Mingan Archipelago (since 1990 in fishing area 16E and since 2004 in fishing area 16F). The main objective of this survey is to assess the status of Icelandic scallop stocks. The study area is situated around the Mingan Archipelago, where scallop beds are sampled at depths ranging from approximately 8 to 136 m, but typically around 40 to 60 m. Sampling is conducted along transects at fixed stations in the study area. Each station is sampled using a lined Digby scallop dredge (20 mm mesh size), towed for roughly 150 m across the seabed.This publication includes three files: the file biometriePetoncle_16, which contains detailed biometric data (species, size, weights and sex) from 2001 to 2025; the file taillePetoncle_16, which provides the size of the individuals sampled from 2010 to 2024; and the file traitPetoncle_16 which contains the abundances and densities per tow from 2004 to 2024. Data on abundances and densities per tow from 2001-2003 is available upon request.This dataset is updated every one to two years as data becomes available. A cleaning of aberrant data has been carried out. However, there is missing data in various columns of the dataset – use the data with caution. Biodiversity of the Mingan Archipelago Icelandic Scallop survey
A research survey of Iceland scallops (Chlamys islandica) using a dredge has been carried out by DFO (Fisheries and Oceans Canada) every 1 or 2 years since 1990 in the Mingan Archipelago ( fishing areas 16E and 16F). The main objective of this research survey was to assess Icelandic Scallop stocks. Another objective was to documented taxa in the captures associated with scallop habitat according to a fixed sampling plan. Occurrences by species (or taxon) are presented by station. The taxonomic and geographical validity of the data was checked and the World Register of Marine Species served as the taxonomic authority for naming all taxa recorded during the survey. Epibenthic invertebrates (mainly molluscs, echinoderms and crustaceans) as well as demersal fish were identified from the dredge catches.The study area is located around the Mingan Archipelago and the sampling of scallop beds is carried out at depths of 8 to 136 m, generally around 40 to 60 m. Sampling is done along transects at fixed stations in the study area. Sampling is done with a lined Digby scallop dredge (20 mm mesh) over approximately 150 m along the seabed. The four baskets of the dredge are examined for all scallops. Next, a basket (the first on the starboard side) is sorted and examined for associated species. Most specimens are counted by taxa. The presence or relative abundance of undersized and numerous, or colonial, organisms is noted. Special cases are sometimes retained for taxonomic analysis, for example, ascidians (to monitor invasive species) and sponges (to document new species).
Department of National Defence Firing Practice and Exercise Areas, Atlantic Canada
The Department of National Defence has designated Firing Practice and Exercise Areas off the coasts of Canada. Activities in these areas may include bombing practice from aircraft, air-to-air, air-to-sea or ground firing, and anti-aircraft firing, etc. In Atlantic Canada, the Nova Scotia Area includes sea area employments for sub-surface operations and firing exercises (FIREX). The Gulf of St. Lawrence Area, excluding the French territorial waters of Saint-Pierre et Miquelon, includes sea area employments for sub-surface operations and underwater demolition training. Watersheds - 1M
The Drainage Areas dataset is largely based on the Water Survey of Canada (WSC) drainage area boundaries at the sub-sub-basin level. The data model supports the derivation, from the Fundamental Drainage Areas dataset (sub-sub-basin level), of the WSC and Atlas of Canada drainage area hierarchies and the data is available in all three schemes. Drainage area definitions for both WSC and Atlas of Canada boundaries were reviewed resulting in some modifications. Larger scale reference data sources were used for further manual boundary adjustments. This dataset has been integrated with other National Scale Frameworks hydrology datasets and is considered a component of the Hydrology Theme (see Supplemental Information for more details about the Atlas of Canada National Frameworks data at the 1:1,000,000 scale).The Atlas Frameworks are a set of integrated base map layers which form part of a larger National-Scale Frameworks data collection. Atlas of Canada - Major Drainage Areas of Canada
Major Drainage Areas (MDA), as portrayed in this map, are part of the Standard Drainage Area Classification (SDAC) which was developed by Natural Resources Canada, in partnership with Statistics Canada, and Environment and Climate Change Canada.A drainage area, as opposed to a drainage basin or watershed, is a unit of statistical aggregation used for reporting purposes based upon drainage patterns and the underlying basins, delimited by a drainage divide.A drainage basin, sometimes called a watershed, is an area where all surface water shares the same drainage outlet. Surface water consists of water flowing on the surface of the earth that develops into larger streams and eventually combines to form a river.The 11 MDAs presented in this map comprise the uppermost level in the drainage area classification system which then divides into 164 sub-drainage areas, and then is further divided into 974 sub-sub-drainage areas. Relief was derived from the merging of two raster data sets, both resampled to 804 metre resolution:- High Resolution Digital Elevation Model (HRDEM) – CanElevation Series- Canadian Digital Elevation Model, 1945-2011Further information on all these maps can be found on the Atlas of Canada web site atlas.gc.ca.
Integrated Resource Plan - Subregional
The Integrated Resource Plan - Subregional dataset is comprised of all the polygons that represent the Sub-Regional Integrated Resource Plans (IRP) in Alberta. All the Sub-Regional IRPs were completed under the Integrated Resource Planning Program, from 1976 to approximately 1995. These plans were endorsed by the Government of Alberta with most being approved by Cabinet. The Sub-Regional Plans describe land-use zonation and objectives within individual defined planning areas, to ensure overall consistency with Regional goals and objectives. An Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) is a plan which identifies the values and associated land and resource management goals for the planning area in consideration of the maintenance of social, economic, and ecological values. An IRP provides direction regarding the type of land and resource management activity that would facilitate meeting the stated objectives in the planning area (for example: recreation, grazing, industrial and commercial activities). The public was often involved in contributing input to the development of an IRP. Majority of IRP plans were endorsed by the Government of Alberta in various periods.
